At Omnicell, we’re excited to announce a new partnership with King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust to deliver a groundbreaking feature within our MedXpert software: the Forecasted Medicines Usage Feature (FMUF).

The development, beginning now, will explore how FMUF can support King’s College Hospital’s mission of improving patient care by reducing delayed and missed doses. This represents an exciting development putting patient safety at the heart of a data strategy to drive continuous improvement and optimisation by delivering a predictive analytics model to support frontline care.

Why this matters

Missed or delayed medication doses—often caused by stock-outs or manual processes—can negatively impact patient outcomes and staff efficiency. Working with King’s College Hospital, we will deliver a FMUF which will help pharmacy and ward teams stay ahead of demand, prevent stock shortages, and ultimately free up time to focus on patient care.

Roger Fernandes, Chief Pharmacist at King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, explains why the Trust is prioritising this evaluation:

“Improving medicines availability is critical to reducing delays in care and easing pressure on busy teams. We believe this project will show how smart technology can provide the insights we need to act sooner and avoid missed doses. I’m excited to see what can be achieved in this project."

His leadership on this project is already drawing attention across NHS Trusts, where he is widely regarded as a respected voice in pharmacy transformation.

What will be delivered?

The Forecasted Medicines Usage Feature will provide real-time insights to help predict and prevent issues such as:

  • Missed doses due to lack of available stock onwards.
  • Unexpected spikes in demand for specific medications.
  • Upcoming stock-outs based on current usage and supply levels.
  • Ward-level risks, using visual tools that help teams prioritise action within the next 24 hours.

By drawing on Omnicell’s MedXpert™ data, FMUF delivers tailored dashboards, charts, and alerts to support faster, smarter decision-making. The feature was co-designed with clinical users at King’s, ensuring that what’s delivered works in the real world of hospital pharmacy.

What we hope to learn

Over the coming months, we’ll be working closely with the team at King’s to monitor how FMUF performs in practice. We’ll be tracking changes in:

  • Number of missed or delayed doses.
  • Frequency of stock-outs.
  • Time spent on manual restocking.
  • End-user adoption and satisfaction.

This is not just about software—it’s about enabling better, safer patient care through smarter processes.
